The Market Area Safety Manager is responsible for leading and driving all facets of safety in the designated market area.
This role is responsible for compliance with the IWS's Health and Safety/ Transportation Compliance Programs and aligning company standards with all applicable legislation.
IWS's goal is to ensure that all programs introduced to staff members and management are communicated properly and understood to provide a safe workplace.
This position is responsible for reinforcing the safety and compliance of front-line staff members who service in the designated market area.
This role will report directly to the Market Area Vice President of Operations.
They will also have a dotted line responsibility to the Corporate Vice President of Safety, ensuring Safety policies and standards, programs, and tools are deployed in the market.
Responsibilities:
Demonstrates a commitment to communicating, improving, and adhering to safety policies in all work environment areas.
Promotes a positive safety culture through leadership by example.
Analyze safety performance, make recommendations, and drive positive change.
Communicate to leadership and Operations the requirements for improving performance including addressing issues, site safety improvement plans, concerns, and corrective actions.
Develop, monitor, and disseminate company safety goals and/or benchmarks to company employees and managers.
Manage work assignments, development, and training of safety supervisors within the designated Market Area Develop a strong partnership with all levels of the organization, specifically Market Area Vice President, to effectively implement safety policies/ procedures, identify trends and ensure that corrective actions are being implemented and followed up on, as needed at the market level.
Oversight of safety functions across multi-site operations as it pertains to the designated market areas.
Conduct incident investigations and incident review meetings with operations to determine root causes and corrective actions.
Manage care of employees when injury occurs including use of tele-nurse program, clinic/ emergency medical attention in conjunction with Operations.
Ensure that monthly safety meetings are completed at each location within the market area.
This includes providing topic information, participating in meetings, and ensuring safety messages are properly conveyed to frontline employees.
Responsible for implementing leading indicator programs, analyzing collected data to meet Market Area goals and drive proactive safety results throughout the market.
Manage and participate in team audits of the facilities (transfer stations, MRFs, Rail Yards, and Hauling Depots) Conduct and Managed leading indicator program which includes route observations/ audits, Safety Lanes (trans compliance audits), report findings and recommend corrective action.
Interact with all levels of management to communicate site-specific safety programs.
Investigate any safety concerns, report findings and recommend corrective measures.
Assist Risk Management department to implement Loss Prevention measures.
Review and communicate findings of Behavioral Analysis reports on regular basis.
Recommend coaching materials to Operations management as needed.
Responsible for and manage all regulatory compliance (DOT, OSHA, BIC, DSNY, NYDEC/ NJDEP, etc.
) Serve as a regulatory resource for the market area.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in relevant field (Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Science) or equivalent combination of education and technical experience.
Certifications such as CIP, a plus.

years of progressive Health & Safety experience Experience from the sanitation industry is strongly preferred.
Experience working with government regulations and a thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local government Health & Safety, Transportation, and compliance regulations (including but not limited to:
DOT, OSHA, NYC BIC, DSNY, NYDEC/ NJDEP, etc.
) Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment.
Excellent ability to communicate, collaborate, and lead individuals/teams.
Lead or participate in special projects as assigned.
Solid computer skills, including MS Office required to efficiently complete audits, reports, access safety applications, etc.
Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
Additional Information:
Incident Management Set up and run incident review calls.
Ensure that an incident follow up report is done for every incident review call Keep track of your incidents.
Know the status and work with Risk to get them back as soon as possible if they are out.
Manage restrictions to ensure that they are being met when employees return Know the OSHA Recordable status of your incidents, ensure that all documentation is properly collected by your teams Ensure integrity of programs and training Take corporate initiatives and get them up and running in your market Ensure that we are not deviating from set programs but ensure that they work for your market.
Monthly Safety Meetings Use supplied content to conduct monthly safety meetings/ training with the location teams to ensure understanding of the topics.
Also provide focus or additional content as needed related to market level concerns/ challenges.
Compliance Tracking Ensure training of employees is up to date.
Review training reports and work with operations to ensure that they are done.
Present metrics and status to your operations team- typically this should be in the weekly ops meetings.
Include all weekly data- incidents/status, KPI compliance (route observations, facility inspections, etc), Corrective Action Log, Samsara/Lytx alerts & coaching status Ensure there is a compliance calendar of tasks to ensure any weekly or monthly required inspections are being completed and documented.
This includes things like eye wash, fire extinguishers/ fire suppression systems and first aid kit inspections.
Safety Supervisors Management of their job functions.
Conduct Route Observations with Route Supervisors Conduct ride-alongs with drivers to evaluate their knowledge, skill and safety compliance Help with accident investigations as needed Training- implement and conduct as needed Ensure that they understand safety, regulations and other compliance items- invest in their development Route Observation Focuses Review employees for compliance in order to develop focus lists for route observations- Items that should be considered higher risk include:
Incident history Term of employment- newer employees should be audited more often Date of last observation- all employees should be observed on a monthly/every other month basis at a minimum Develop a focus list that route supervisors need to complete each month to ensure we are observing the higher risk employees while still watching compliance across the whole team.
Manage Corrective Action Program Consolidate corrective actions from all of the various avenues that they are developed such as incident reviews Track items for progress and completion Facility Inspections- Manage & Participate in inspections, fire drills and other facility related KPIs Salary Range Minimum:
